Streams Power Ariana Grande to a 1-2-3 US Chart Success
We knew that Ariana Grande’s new album ‘thank u, next’ had broken records on Apple Music, but now we’ve got a sense of its wider streaming performance in the US. Grande currently occupies first, second and third spots in Billboard’s Hot 100 songs chart – the first artist to do so since the Beatles in 1964 (and they’re the only other example in US chart history). Streaming is the key, unsurprisingly: top-placed ‘7 rings’ was streamed 63.5m times in the US last week, with strong numbers for second-placed ‘break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored’ (59.2m streams) and third-ranked ‘thank u, next’ (36.8m). Overall, Grande has 11 songs in Billboard’s top 40 – the most simultaneous hits in that span by a female artist ever – beating Cardi B’s nine in April 2018, although Drake’s 21 top-40 tracks in July 2018 remains the leader on this particular metric.
