Black Public Media Opens 10th PitchBLACK Call for Filmmakers

Black Public Media has officially launched the open call for its upcoming PitchBLACK Forum and Awards, inviting independent creators to submit proposals for feature-length nonfiction projects. The initiative, now entering its tenth edition, serves as an annual competitive platform designed to support and elevate filmmakers focused on documenting Black narratives.

Through the 2026 Open Call, five independent filmmakers will be selected to participate in the pitch forum scheduled to take place next spring. Each creator chosen for the forum will be granted $20,000 to aid their production efforts. At the culmination of the competitive pitching process, one final winning project will be awarded an additional $150,000 in dedicated production funding.

Project Scope and Eligibility Guidelines

The call is open to feature-length nonfiction pieces across an array of genres, styles, and storytelling formats. Black Public Media has highlighted an emphasis on works that explore critical contemporary topics, foster deeper cultural understanding, and connect meaningfully with local communities as well as broader national audiences. Furthermore, all submitted titles must be suitable for distribution across public media channels.

Submissions are accepted from projects currently situated in pre-production, active filming, or early stages of post-production. Participation is restricted to United States citizens who serve in the key leadership role of either director or producer on the proposed film.

Initiatives of this scale remain vital to the broader creative economy, including the music and sound design sectors that collaborate closely with visual storytellers. For creative professionals across the African diaspora, platforms backing independent Black nonfiction provide critical pathways for cultural narratives, original music compositions, and interdisciplinary collaborations to access substantial institutional backing and broadcast reach.
