First Features Project Completes Initial Slate of 12 Debut Films

In 2020, Natives Filmworks and Michelangelo Productions established the First Features Project to tackle a persistent challenge in Nollywood: the barrier to directing a full-length debut. Six years after its launch, the talent development program has reached its initial goal of backing twelve debut feature films from emerging Nigerian directors.

The concluding entry in the twelve-film catalog is The Almajiri, scheduled for 2026. Through the initiative, selected filmmakers received a combination of structured training, industry mentorship, and direct production financing. The program was specifically designed to move talent across the difficult divide separating early-career work from major commercial directing credits.

Bridging Career Gaps in Nollywood

Despite Nollywood’s established standing as a prolific filmmaking industry, transitioning into feature directing remains a significant hurdle. Talented professionals across various disciplines—such as screenwriting, acting, cinematography, and short-film direction—regularly encounter systemic limitations that prevent them from securing their first directorial feature assignment.

By directly funding and mentoring twelve directors, the First Features Project provided the practical resources required to bypass those traditional bottlenecks. For the wider African creative ecosystem, structured developmental pipelines of this kind represent a sustainable method for cultivating fresh directorial voices and expanding production standards.

With the initial phase of the initiative now complete, the long-term success of the First Features Project will be gauged by what follows. Rather than simply counting twelve released titles, the lasting effect will depend on the sustained career growth, future opportunities, and creative output of the participating directors across the film landscape.
