Why Emerging Nigerian Acts Are Mining Legacy Genres

A growing number of emerging Nigerian recording artists are actively exploring classic domestic genres to develop distinct creative identities. In an increasingly crowded commercial landscape where thousands of songs vie for listener attention daily, delivering a standard contemporary sound is no longer a guaranteed route to breaking through.

As Nigerian popular music expands its international footprint, industry observers and listeners have also raised concerns regarding sonic uniformity across mainstream releases. For rising talent seeking recognition, turning to older musical forms provides an opportunity to offer something that feels rooted in domestic tradition while simultaneously standing apart from standard chart offerings.

Precedents in Contemporary Afrobeats

This creative strategy builds on a long-standing tradition within Nigeria’s commercial music space. Established contemporary acts have regularly engaged with legacy recordings to anchor modern hits. Wizkid, for example, drew from Fela Kuti’s catalog on multiple occasions, interpolating the 1972 release “Lady” for his 2014 single “Jaiye Jaiye,” and later referencing Kuti’s 1972 track “Shakara” on his 2017 song “Sweet Love.”

Other prominent acts have applied similar techniques to indigenous styles outside Afrobeat. Davido’s 2017 release “Like Dat” incorporated musical elements from Fuji veteran K1 De Ultimate’s 2010 composition “Agogo Ko Ma Ro,” demonstrating how newer mainstream stars have repeatedly turned to earlier eras of Nigerian music for structural inspiration.

For the African music industry, the sustained reliance on legacy sounds underlines the commercial and cultural endurance of historical catalogs. As younger performers continue to revisit past eras to solve modern branding and artistic challenges, licensing and catalog management are likely to remain central to contemporary repertoire development.
