CAF Backs Gianni Infantino for 2027 FIFA Presidential Race
Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has announced that the continent will provide unanimous backing to FIFA President Gianni Infantino ahead of the 2027 FIFA presidential election. Motsepe stated that all 54 African member associations intend to deliver their unconditional support as Infantino campaigns for another term leading the global body.
The declaration was delivered at the CAF Strategy Conference in Cape Verde on Thursday, October 8, 2026. The collective commitment from the continent’s national federations provides a significant boost for the incumbent leader’s re-election ambitions.
Infrastructure Funding and Strategic Backing
The unified African endorsement arrives at a moment when Infantino has encountered pushback from parts of the broader international football landscape. Critics have previously questioned his administrative direction, notably concerning a proposed commercial investment strategy that was eventually withdrawn.
Motsepe attributed Africa’s position to Infantino’s track record in supporting football projects across the continent. Since taking leadership of FIFA in 2016, Infantino has built close ties with African sports administrators, directing resources toward continental initiatives and infrastructure development.
During discussions surrounding the partnership, Infantino noted that approximately $1 billion has been directed toward African football development through the FIFA Forward program, cementing the institutional ties between CAF and the global governing body.
