Nigerian Singer FOLA Releases Sophomore Album ‘9’

Nigerian singer and songwriter FOLA has officially released his second studio album, titled 9. Comprising 14 tracks, the new body of work serves as the direct successor to his debut album, Catharsis, arriving on digital streaming platforms as one of the most keenly awaited African pop projects of the month.

The concept behind the album’s title stems directly from football culture, where the number-nine jersey designates the primary center-forward responsible for scoring decisive goals. FOLA has associated his creative process with this sporting position, describing himself as the musical equivalent of a frontline striker who is called upon whenever a decisive, high-impact hit record is required.

Leading into the full album release, FOLA executed a steady, multi-stage promotional strategy. Pre-release singles included “Treat U Right,” which features vocal contributions from Ayra Starr, as well as the solo offerings “attention!” and “fine ting (fine $hit).” On September 10, the campaign delivered “it’s over,” a collaboration featuring his label boss Bella Shmurda and rapper Zlatan. Serving as the album’s closing track, the single was accompanied by an official music video to maximize visual exposure.

Cross-Industry Collaborations and Familiar References

Beyond its advance singles, 9 features an extensive lineup of guest contributors from across the Nigerian music landscape. The tracklist includes high-profile appearances such as Davido on “2am In Toronto,” BNXN on “My Type,” and Darkoo on “Hold U Down.” The album also looks back at Nigerian pop history with “Crime,” a record reported to be a modern reinterpretation of 2Baba’s classic 2006 release, “If Love Is a Crime.” Furthermore, the song “WAF” arrives on the project with pre-existing digital traction, having developed a dedicated following on TikTok after an unfinished version leaked online in May.

For African artists and industry observers, FOLA’s second full-length effort exemplifies the ongoing structural trend toward strategic team-ups and digital momentum building. By combining established industry stars, label executive backing, platform-driven organic exposure, and nods to foundational Afrobeats classics, the project illustrates how contemporary artists assemble multifaceted campaigns to position sophomore records in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
