Nigerian Visual Artist Esther Adeola Seriki Earns Global Acclaim
Nigerian visual artist and fine art photographer Esther Adeola Seriki continues to build a distinct footprint within contemporary African imagery. Active in photographic practice since 2017, Seriki navigates conceptual portraiture, fine art compositions, and mixed media projects to interrogate identity and visual narrative.
Cultural Metaphor and Conceptual Structure
A central piece of her critical recognition is the project titled “Core & Course: Who I Am!,” subtitled “A Triptych in Three Movements.” The multi-layered photographic work uses structured compositions and symbolic dress to explore generational and personal themes across an unfolding sequence.
The opening series presents a maternal figure garbed in traditional Yoruba àṣọ òkè attire, establishing an anchor in heritage. The narrative then shifts in its second segment to capture a younger woman styled in mudukare, before circling back in the final movement to the initial subject, who appears dressed in contemporary lace. Together, the visual metaphors and evolving fabric choices trace an evolving dialogue between lineage, youth, and womanhood.
The body of work gained notable acclaim in 2023 after being presented in the Wiki Loves Earth photography competition organized by the Wikimedia Foundation. Seriki earned first place nationally in Nigeria before going on to secure eighth place globally within the contest’s specialized Human Rights and Environment category.
For Africa’s creative industries, the international recognition of conceptual artists like Seriki demonstrates how visual storytelling continues to complement music, design, and performance, providing rich cultural imagery that shapes the aesthetic direction of the continent’s broader creative economy.
