Shaw and Mainoo Sidelined for United’s Clash with Atlético

Manchester United will be without Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo for their upcoming UEFA Champions League match against Atlético Madrid. Both players have been ruled out of the fixture after sustaining fitness setbacks during domestic league action over the weekend.

United head coach Michael Carrick confirmed that the English duo did not travel with the squad ahead of the European encounter on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The injuries occurred during United’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, leaving Carrick with reduced personnel for the trip to face Diego Simeone’s side.

Addressing reporters during his pre-match press conference, Carrick noted that medical evaluations are ongoing to determine the extent of the damage. He stated that neither Shaw nor Mainoo is ready for match action, prompting the coaching staff to leave them behind in Manchester to continue their assessments.

Defensive Concerns for Carrick

Shaw’s unavailability intensifies United’s challenges in defence, particularly at full-back. The team is already missing Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui due to existing injury concerns, leaving the squad depleted of senior options on the flanks.

To navigate the defensive shortage against Atlético Madrid, Carrick is expected to consider Diogo Dalot as an option to fill in at left-back. The manager may also look toward the club’s youth ranks to supply additional defensive depth for the continental fixture.
